Etymology

Ίσιος grew out of Ancient Greek ἴσος (isos), meaning equal or level, with the adjectival ending -ιος added in later Greek. Over time the sense shifted from equal to even and then to straight, the word used today for roads, lines, hair, and by extension honest people. The deeper origin of ἴσος itself is disputed among scholars, and some think it may come from a pre-Greek substrate word rather than a clear Indo-European root.
