Etymology
The verb joins the prefix κατά (down, thoroughly) to ῥέω (to flow). Its literal sense was a river or bank flowing or washing away downward, and this image of ground giving way under a current shifted into the general sense of collapse. Modern Greek keeps this sense for buildings, systems, and people who break down under strain.
