Κατάρρευση comes from the verb καταρρέω, built from κατά (down) and ῥέω (to flow). The verb originally described water or matter flowing downward, and by extension a structure giving way. The noun form, with the action suffix -ση, turned that verb into an abstract noun for the event of falling apart.
