Etymology

Ενήλικας comes from the prefix εν- ("in, at") joined to ηλικία ("age"). The compound means literally "at the age", that is, having reached the required age. It replaced the older form ενήλικος in everyday modern Greek and now serves as both adjective and noun for a grown person.
