The word comes from Italian quarantina, meaning a period of forty days, from quaranta, forty. Venetian port authorities used this term for the forty-day isolation period imposed on ships suspected of carrying plague. Greek borrowed the word directly from Italian, along with many other maritime and administrative terms picked up through centuries of trade contact.
