Etymology

Γιλέκο entered Greek from Turkish yelek, meaning vest or waistcoat, during the long period of contact under Ottoman rule. The word spread across the Balkans through Turkish, so several neighboring languages share close forms. It is not a native Greek formation and has no Indo-European root of its own within Greek.
