Etymology

The verb comes from the adjective ισχυρός, meaning strong or powerful, with the deponent suffix -ίζομαι added to form a verb. Ισχυρός in turn goes back to the noun ισχύς, strength or force, which shares its root with the verb ἔχω/ἴσχω, to hold. Over time the sense shifted from a physical idea of strength to a rhetorical one: to hold a position firmly, and so to assert or claim something.
