Etymology

The word goes back to Ancient Greek ἰσχύς, traditionally analyzed as a compound of ἴς (gen. ἰνός), an old word for physical force or sinew, and a form related to ἔχω, to hold. Together they gave a sense close to holding power. The same ισχυ- base spread through a wide family of Greek words for strength and validity, and it kept that meaning unchanged into Modern Greek.
