Etymology

ισχύω is a denominative verb built on the noun ἰσχύς 'strength, might', and originally meant 'to be strong, to prevail' before its modern sense 'to be in force, to apply' developed. The deeper origin of ἰσχύς is disputed: it is traditionally connected with ἴσχω 'to hold, check' (a reduplicated present of the root of ἔχω 'to have, hold'), from PIE *seǵʰ- 'to hold, overpower'. Some scholars (notably Beekes) instead regard ἰσχύς as of Pre-Greek origin, so the PIE connection should be treated as tentative.
