Etymology

A transparent Ancient Greek compound of σύν 'together, with' (assimilated to συμ- before the labial β) and βουλή 'will, counsel, plan', a derivative of βούλομαι 'to want, to deliberate'. The literal idea is of people taking counsel together, which yields the modern sense 'advice'. The PIE root cited below belongs to the βουλή element; σύν has no securely established Indo-European cognates.
