Etymology
Derived from the adjective αμφίβολος ('ambiguous, doubtful') plus the abstract-noun suffix -ία. αμφίβολος itself combines the prefix ἀμφί ('on both sides, around') with the root of βάλλω ('to throw'), giving the image of something 'thrown' or 'striking' from both sides at once — hence uncertain. The word is already attested in Ancient Greek and passed unchanged in meaning into the modern language.
