From the Ancient Greek adjective ἐναντίος ("opposite, facing, contrary"), formed from ἐν ("in, on") plus ἀντίος ("set against, facing"), itself derived from the preposition ἀντί ("against, opposite, instead of"). The modern adverb ενάντια is the neuter plural of the adjective ενάντιος used adverbially, a common Greek pattern for forming adverbs. It typically pairs with the preposition σε (ενάντια σε, "against").
