Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἀρκετός 'sufficient', a verbal adjective of the verb ἀρκέω 'to ward off, suffice, be enough'. The verb traces back to the Proto-Indo-European root *h₂erk- 'to hold, contain, guard', the same root that gave Latin arceō 'to enclose, keep off' and arca 'chest'. The modern adjective preserved both the form and the core sense of 'being enough'.
