Etymology
Substantivized from the adjective αξιωματικός, derived from αξίωμα ('rank, dignity, office'; also 'axiom'), itself from αξιόω ('to deem worthy') and ultimately άξιος ('worthy'). The military sense — a person invested with rank and command — grew from the idea of someone holding dignity and office. The very same form survives as the adjective αξιωματικός meaning 'axiomatic'.
