Etymology
Άξιος comes from the ancient Greek verb ἄγω, which meant to weigh as well as to lead or drive. A person or thing that was άξιος originally 'weighed as much as' its price or claim, and the sense shifted from a literal balance to moral worth. The adjective has kept this meaning of deserving or matching a value for nearly three thousand years.
