Etymology

Καλωσήρθατε is a fusion of two older words that Greeks used to say together as one greeting. Καλώς means "well" and ήρθατε is the second-person plural aorist of έρχομαι, "to come." Over time speakers ran the phrase καλώς ήρθατε together into a single word, much as English speakers fused "well come" into "welcome." The verb έρχομαι itself has an irregular history in Greek, since its past and future tenses come from stems unrelated to its present tense.
