Etymology
Καλωσορίζω is built from the old greeting formula καλώς όρισες, literally something like 'you have arrived well' or 'you have set foot well'. The adverb καλώς comes from καλός, meaning good. The verb ορίζω normally means to determine or set a boundary, from ὅρος, meaning limit or border, but in this fixed phrase it carries the older sense of arriving or taking one's place. Over time the phrase fused into a single verb used for the act of welcoming someone.
