Βελτιώνω is built on βελτίων, the ancient comparative form meaning "better," which along with the superlative βέλτιστος filled in for the irregular comparison of ἀγαθός, "good." The origin of the βελτ- stem itself is not securely traced to a known root. Modern Greek adds the verb-forming suffix -ώνω to turn this comparative idea into an action: to make something reach a better state.
