Etymology
σύνταγμα comes from συντάσσω, 'to draw up or arrange together,' built from σύν ('with, together') and τάσσω ('to arrange, put in order'). The result-noun suffix -μα turns the verb into 'a thing arranged together,' a sense that split into an ordered body of troops (a regiment) and, in the modern state, the ordered body of fundamental laws (a constitution). The root of τάσσω itself is not securely traced to a Proto-Indo-European form; many etymologists treat it as a word of unclear, possibly pre-Greek origin.
