Σύνταξη is a noun built from the verb συντάσσω, which itself joins the prefix συν- (together) to τάσσω (to arrange, put in order). The core sense is an ordered arrangement: of words in a sentence, of a document being drafted, of a staff assembled to produce a publication, or of payments fixed and arranged for a retiree. Modern Greek narrowed the everyday use heavily toward the pension sense, since a pension is literally a fixed, arranged sum.
