The word comes from Ancient Greek μέτωπον, built from μετά (between, after) and the root seen in ὤψ, meaning eye or face. Together they described the part of the face between or above the eyes, the forehead. The same word later widened to mean a front line, in war or in politics, by analogy with the forward-facing part of the body.
