χημικός is built from χημεία, the Greek word for chemistry, plus the common adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning 'pertaining to'. The origin of χημεία itself is disputed. Some scholars trace it to an old Greek word for the art of alloying metals, others to an Egyptian word for the 'black land', referring to Egypt. The term passed through Arabic al-kimiya and medieval Latin alchimia before returning to Greek in its modern form.
