Etymology
Χημεία descends from earlier Greek χυμεία, built on χυμός, 'juice' or 'sap', which is tied to the verb χέω, 'to pour'. In late antiquity the word named the craft of extracting and working the essences of metals, an ancestor of alchemy. That craft term passed into Arabic as al-kimia and then into medieval Latin as alchemia, the source of English 'alchemy' and 'chemistry'. Modern Greek later fixed χημεία as the name for the modern science, drawing on the same ancient root.
