Etymology
Πειρατής comes from ancient Greek πειράω, meaning to attempt or to attack, which itself traces to πεῖρα, an attempt or trial. The word passed into Latin as pirata and from there into English as pirate. So the English word for a sea raider is a direct borrowing of this Greek term.
