Etymology
Κοπάδι comes from the medieval Greek κοπάδιον, a diminutive built on κοπή, meaning a cut or a portion cut off. That noun in turn derives from the verb κόπτω, to cut or strike. The sense shifted from a cut-off piece to a group of animals separated from a larger herd, and then simply to any flock or herd.
