Εγκαίρως is the adverb form of the adjective έγκαιρος, which combines the prefix εν- (in, within) with καιρός (the right or critical moment). Before the velar κ, the nasal of εν- assimilates to γ, giving εγ-. The adjective ending -ος is then swapped for the adverbial ending -ως. Καιρός itself was already a distinct concept in ancient Greek, meaning the opportune moment rather than mere duration, which is χρόνος.
