Etymology
The word comes from Λέσβος, the Greek island where the poet Sappho lived and wrote verse celebrating love between women. Over time the feminine demonym Λεσβία, meaning a woman from Lesbos, gave rise to the common noun λεσβία for a woman who loves women. English borrowed the same root to form lesbian, so the Greek and English words share a direct historical link rather than a distant one.
