Etymology
Προσωρινός is built from the prefix προς- (toward, near) attached to ώρα (hour, time, season) plus the adjectival suffix -ινός. The original sense was something like "belonging to the present moment," which narrowed over time to "temporary" or "provisional." The root ώρα also gave Greek its word for clock (ωρολόγιο) and passed into Latin as hora, the ancestor of English "hour."
