Etymology

Τάγμα comes from the verb τάσσω (also written τάττω), meaning to arrange or put in order. The suffix -μα forms nouns that name the result of an action, so τάγμα originally meant 'a thing arranged' or 'an ordered body'. Over time it settled on the sense of a group of people organized as a unit, most often a military division. The word has passed into Modern Greek largely unchanged, and now also covers religious orders and ranks in biological classification.
