Etymology

Ξοδεύω is built on έξοδο, the Modern Greek word for an expense or outlay. Έξοδο in turn comes from ancient ἔξοδος, meaning a going out or exit, formed from the prefix ἐκ- (out) and ὁδός (way, road). The verb-forming suffix -εύω was added to turn the noun of expense into an action: to make expenses, to spend.
