Etymology

Χαιρετισμός is a noun built from the verb χαιρετίζω, meaning to greet. That verb in turn comes from χαίρω, meaning to rejoice or be glad, since the ancient Greek greeting χαῖρε literally meant rejoice. The suffix -σμός turns the verb into an abstract noun naming the act itself, so χαιρετισμός is literally the act of greeting.
