Etymology
Παρθένος is an ancient Greek word already present in Homer, where it means an unmarried young woman or virgin. Its origin before Greek is unclear. Many linguists treat it as a Pre-Greek word, inherited from a language spoken in the Aegean before Greek arrived, rather than from Proto-Indo-European. No safe cognates outside Greek have been established.
