Modern Greek κόβω descends from Ancient Greek κόπτω, meaning to strike or cut. Over time the middle consonant softened and the verb shifted to the -ω conjugation pattern seen today, while the old root still surfaces in the aorist stem κοψ-. The change from κόπτω to κόβω is a case of sound simplification common in the move from Ancient to Modern Greek.
