Etymology
Συμβάν is the neuter form of συμβάς, the aorist participle of the verb συμβαίνω, meaning to happen or to coincide. Modern Greek froze this participle into a plain noun meaning incident or event, heard most often in police reports and news bulletins as το συμβάν. The verb itself splits into συν- (together, with) and βαίνω (to step, to go), so the underlying image is of separate things stepping together into one occurrence.
