Etymology
The word comes from χειρουργός, a compound of χείρ (hand) and the stem of έργον (work), meaning literally one who works with the hands. The adjective suffix -ικός was added to form χειρουργικός, meaning pertaining to such handwork, in practice medical surgery. The same Greek roots passed through Latin chirurgia into English as surgery and surgeon.
