ποιώto make, to do (formal/archaic register)Etymology
Ποιητής comes from the verb ποιέω, meaning to make or to do, plus the agent suffix -της, which marks the person who performs an action. So the word originally meant simply maker, and only later narrowed to its main modern sense of poet, someone who makes verses. The verb ποιέω itself has no settled origin outside Greek: scholars have not traced it to a confirmed root in the wider Indo-European family, and some suspect it comes from an older, pre-Greek language.
