Κόψιμο is built from the verb κόβω (also κόπτω), "to cut," plus the deverbal suffix -ιμο, which turns a verb stem into a neuter noun naming the action or its result. This pattern is productive in Modern Greek: γράφω gives γράψιμο ("writing"), πλένω gives πλύσιμο ("washing"). The deeper origin of κόπτω is not settled. Beekes treats it as likely Pre-Greek, meaning it may predate the arrival of Greek speakers and have no Indo-European root at all.
