Etymology

Αστραπή comes from Ancient Greek ἀστραπή, the standard word for lightning already in Homer. It is closely tied to the verb ἀστράπτω, meaning to flash like lightning. Its ultimate origin is not settled. Some older sources link it to ἀστήρ, star, but modern scholars treat that connection as uncertain rather than proven, and some suspect the word predates Greek entirely.
