Σωτηρία descends from Ancient Greek σωτηρία, built on σωτήρ, meaning savior or deliverer. Σωτήρ itself comes from the verb σῴζω, to save or preserve. The abstract noun suffix -ία turns the agent word into a state: the condition of being saved. The word kept this meaning through Koine Greek, where it became central to Christian vocabulary for salvation, and it survives largely unchanged in Modern Greek.
