Etymology
Modern Greek πατάω comes from ancient πατέω, meaning to tread or walk on. Its deeper origin is disputed. Some scholars link it to the noun πάτος, meaning track or path, but the ultimate root is not firmly established, and Beekes treats it as possibly of substrate origin rather than clearly Indo-European. The word has stayed in continuous use from antiquity to today with essentially the same core sense.
