Etymology
The verb combines the prefix δια- (through, thoroughly) with βεβαιώνω, itself built on the adjective βέβαιος (certain, firm). Βέβαιος traces back to a reduplicated form connected with βαίνω (to step, to stand), so the underlying sense is of something standing firmly on its feet. Adding δια- intensifies the act of making something firm, giving the sense of assuring someone thoroughly.
