Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ἀντίθεσις, built from the prefix ἀντί (against, opposite) and θέσις (a placing, a position), itself from the verb τίθημι (to put, to place). So the word literally means a position set against another one. English borrowed the same Greek word directly as thesis and antithesis.
