Etymology
Μπανιέρα entered Modern Greek through the same wave of Italian bathing vocabulary that gave Greek μπάνιο (bath). The base goes back to Latin balneum, which itself came from Ancient Greek βαλανεῖον (bathhouse), so the word made a round trip through Latin and Italian before returning to Greek in its current form. The productive Greek suffix -ιέρα, used for containers and appliances, was then attached to form the specific word for the bathtub.
