Etymology
From Ancient Greek στῆθος (stêthos) 'chest, breast', which has denoted the front of the thorax continuously from Homer to today. Its deeper origin is disputed: it was traditionally linked to the Indo-European root meaning 'to stand', but many modern scholars regard it as of Pre-Greek (substrate) origin and therefore etymologically uncertain.
