Etymology

The word is a compound of όποιος, the relative and indefinite pronoun meaning "whichever, whoever," and δήποτε, an intensifying indefinite particle meaning "ever, at all." Δήποτε itself comes from δή (an emphatic particle) plus ποτέ ("at some time, ever"). Joining the two produces a stronger, all-inclusive indefinite pronoun: "whoever/whichever it may be."
