Etymology

The word is built from the negative prefix αν- (not), the adjective αμφίβολος (doubtful, ambiguous), and the adverbial ending -α. αμφίβολος itself comes from αμφί (on both sides) and a stem tied to βάλλω (to throw), so it originally meant something like thrown both ways, or undecided. Adding the negative prefix flips doubtful into not doubtful, giving undoubtedly.
