Φιλανθρωπία is an ancient Greek compound of φίλος (loving, dear) and άνθρωπος (human being), joined with the abstract noun suffix -ία. It meant love of humankind, kindness shown to people in general, and later came to cover generous giving for the public good. English borrowed the word directly as philanthropy in the sixteenth century.
