Etymology

Ισόβιος, -α, -ο is a compound of ίσος (equal, the same as) and βίος (life). Together the parts mean something like "equal to one's life," which settled into the sense "lasting for a lifetime." The feminine/neuter-plural form ισόβια is the one most often seen on its own, especially in legal usage where it stands in for "ισόβια κάθειρξη" (life imprisonment).
