Etymology

Αμφιβάλλω joins the prefix αμφι- ("on both sides") with βάλλω ("to throw"). The image is of throwing one's judgment both ways at once, leaning toward two opposing views instead of settling on one. Over time this literal sense of split throwing narrowed to the abstract meaning of doubt or uncertainty. The root βάλλω itself has a disputed history, so no single Proto-Indo-European root is given for the whole compound.
