Etymology

Βραβείο comes from ancient Greek βραβεῖον, the prize given to the winner of a contest. That noun is built on βραβεύς, the judge or umpire who presided over athletic and dramatic contests and decided the winner. The word later gave rise to the verb βραβεύω, to judge or to award a prize, which is still in everyday use.
